Q: I have a new pair of suede shoes. How do I avoid destroying them like the last pair and even the pair before that ? I can never get my suede shoes to last very long. What is the proper way to take care of them?
Suede is tougher than it looks. To keep your shoes in prime condition, occasionally apply a protective product. In addition, a pair of unvarnished shoe trees should be put int them when they're not on your feet. These will absorb perspiration and help them keep their shape. After wearing, simply brush with a soft-bristle brush ( do not use a wire one ) ; this should be a regular wearing procedure for general care.
In case they get lightly stained, and it's almost certain that they will, you can brush them with a soft gum eraser and that should do the trick. If you caught in the rain then stuff them with paper towels and put them in a dry place for twenty-four hours. After that, brush back the nap and they'll be nursed back to health. Steaming them is also another great option to loosen the fabric before brushing.
