This alteration is one of the most-common, especially when you are purchasing off the rack garments. Simply put, when purchasing a ready-made, the silhouette is not created to factor in your posture. So if you, like most people are slightly head forward or slumping shoulders then this alteration is almost a necessity to have.
This alterations is required when additional fabric begins pooling at the collar point. This is primarily caused as mentioned above by an incorrect cut when posture is set. The tailor will simply pin around ¼” to 1" of excess fabric and cut.
When finished, the back of your jacket should look completely flat and without any bubbling of gathered fabric below the collar.
